The ‘Spotlight on the Designer’ is an all-access interview with the brands and designers behind Maison du Maillot. For many of them this is their first time they will be available in this part of the world and we want to know what they wear, how they create and what inspires them!

This week we interview Adriana Cara, the LA based designer of Le Swim.

Tell us a little about Le Swim...LeSwim was founded in 2013 and shipped its first collection for Spring 2014. Just prior, I had spent several years styling hundreds of looks as a fashion editor. So, for me, it’s about creating an image. LeSwim is my vision of chic resort style.

What or who inspires you, and why? There are some late 60s/ early 70s images of Jacqueline Onassis, aboard the Christina, which epitomize jet set style. They are inspirational because they capture a mood, and you can see how fashion really helped set the stage.

What was the inspiration behind your newest collection? I was thinking of the effortless glamor of a Mediterranean getaway. The color schemes are “dusk” and “high noon”, reflecting deep seas, coastal cliffs, and clear sunny days.

What is your favourite piece from your recent collection and why?  The silk beach pant is my favorite piece from the 2015 collection. I am finding them far more than just a beach pant. Although I love them après beach, over the nantucket, they are also the perfect casual day pant with a drapey tee and strappy flats, or dressed up with a metallic heel and a relaxed white blazer.

Do you have anything in the future you are really excited about for your brand? Yes, as a matter of fact…I am launching a small capsule of flat sandals next year to complete the LeSwim look! I have roots in shoe design, having designed my own collection, which was sold in some of the best stores around the world. So, I am excited to incorporate that into LeSwim’s evolution into a lifestyle resort collection.

What is your one piece of advice you would give to any designer who is starting up or considering starting up? I think it is important for a collection to have it’s own voice. There is so much out there, so in order for a brand to find it’s identity, it is really important for a designer to know who that brand’s customer is.

Where are your favourite beaches/pools around the world and why? I love the pool at the Santa Marina on Mykonos. I couldn’t think of a more perfect afternoon than soaking up the warm sun after lunching on black squid linguini and rose by the pool. As for beaches, I have so many favorites, all so different…among them are Las Alamandas in Mexico, Lanikai in Hawaii, and some of the untouched islands of the Bahamas where  tourists are rarely found!

What are your beach bag essential?  Coola organic mango sunscreen for it’s divine scent, Jouer lip gloss in Bellini, my Swell bottle for ice cold water, a sun hat, and a great book!

What is your own signature beach style? Minimal chic: slicked back low bun, glamourous sunnies and a bikini that sits low on the hips.

And finally, do you have any top tips for staying stylish by the pool/beach and if so, what is it? A sleek suit in a muted color with a gold cuff or upper arm band can be very chic and empowering poolside.
