An Insider’s Guide to Barbados

Our favourite, off the beaten path, things to do on the picturesque Caribbean island of Barbados.

Written by Fifi Faiz

Forget glitzy Sandy Lane and the Friday night fish fry at Oistin’s. We’ll give you the low down on some of our favourite BIM hangouts to enjoy on your Caribbean vacation.

Rum Vaults at Colony Club

No trip to Barbados is complete without discovering the delicious rum drinks the island has in store for you. For a great tour and tasting head to the famous Mount Gay Distillery, but for a more discreet and personalised introduction to the world or rum head to the newly opened Rum Vaults. Enjoy over 150 types of rum from Barbados and around the globe, enjoy a meal pairing and have expert Corrie guide you through the experience. Definitely one not to miss.

One Eleven

Spend the day lazing about One Eleven’s gorgeous beach spot in Speightstown. Enjoy a range of bites, a rum punch (using their Trinidadian touch of spice), head out on the water for some SUP (stand up paddle) and then top up the tan at the beach there. It’s a fun day out for all the family (have the rum punch post SUP, not pre, you have been warned!).

ECO Restaurant

Want to tuck into some seriously good grub while enjoying spectacular views? Then head to the East Coast for great flavours sourced locally and cooked up by Chef Alisha. You will want to book ahead for their popular Sunday brunch, that includes dishes like Lobster Eggs Benedict and Bajanzuelan Arepas, but most of all…get ready to be wowed by views of the stunning Atlantic surf.

Hunte’s Garden

Why visit this leafy green hideaway? Because you’ll want to spend hours reading under the canopies, holed away on benches in the little nooks and crannies all around. This stunning green oasis is a perfect escape when you want a break from the beach (though that is pretty impossible to imagine too!). Head here for a light lunch, a cup of tea and a saunter amongst the tropical flora and fauna.

Boosy’s Surf School

Whether it’s your first time on a surfboard or you’re an experienced surfer, you’ll want to give Boosy a call. Book a class with this highly experienced surf teacher who’ll make sure you get to see Barbados from the beautiful clear blue waters. It’s a lot of fun and you’ll be working off those extra rum calories at the same time.
