SPOTLIGHT ON THE DESIGNER
An interview with Juliet Dunn
Interviewed by Maison du Maillot
In your words, tell us about yourself…
I’ve worked in the fashion world throughout my entire career. My collections in the 70s and 80s were known for their femininity and glamour.
Tell us about Juliet Dunn – (how it started, when it started, why it started etc.)
In 2000 I went on a trip to India, and a romance instantly began. I loved the colours, artistry and beautiful chaos. It was so exciting that I just had to find an excuse to work there, and so my beach collection was born.
What are three words you would use to describe your brand?
Stylish, Individual, colourful.
What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Juliet Dunn is all about sun drenched bohemia and global glamour. The clothes are always made with a fun, creative gypset aesthetic in mind. This season we played on the theme “out of India, into Africa” with a focus on tribal patterns, hand-blocked elephant prints and vibrant embroideries.
Looking ahead, do you have anything you are really excited about for the brand?
I am currently designing the new collection for 2020 which means I’m constantly excited! I make the collection in various states of India depending on the style I require. I spend fascinating days with various artisans and scour markets for inspiration. This is my favourite part of the entire process, as possibilities are endless.
What 3 things inspire you at the moment?
The same things always inspire me, the beach, sunshine and colour.
Where is your favourite beach destination?
The Maldives or Cyclades. Blue seas and blue skies! Perfection.
Where would you like to travel to in 2019 and why?
There is a group of uninhabited islands off the coast of Southern Burma in The Andaman Sea called “The Mergu Archipelago”. They are spectacular and I would love to go back and discover more.
What book do you recommend we add to our holiday reading list?
Books are so individual and personal to the reader. Holidays are when I unwind, so I just load up my Kindle with relaxing easy reads!
What is your beach bag essential?
Sunglasses. I like Taylor Morris or Celine. I love to wear a brightly coloured mismatching bikini and white hand embroidered cover up or bright breezy poncho.
What is your top beach beauty tip?
Wear SPF! I use Tinted Sun Block 50 by Avene, a holistic brand I love. It comes in a compact with sponge and mirror.
My desert island essential is………..
A boat! I always look forward to coming back as I love my home!
