Our latest interview is with Calcutta based Nupur Goenka, founder of AISH
Edited by Parissa Venturini
Tell us a little about the brand...
AISH was born out of the love of the textile crafts of India. Textiles that I grew up with, old muslins that we use to tie up delicate pashmina shawls and sarees to protect them; the Khadi cottons that the washers use to bundle up clothes and carry on their shoulders, old sarees that were made into make shift cradles for babies — textiles of everyday Indian life. These basic fabrics that we take for granted here in India are painstakingly handmade. AISH sees them a little differently and attempts to give them a bit of the podium that they deserve.
We make comfortable and sensual separates and kaftans for a life on the go – it will take you from beach to city to lounge. We believe that well made and responsible fashion resonates within them an integrity and honesty that is hard to fake.
What are three words you would use to describe your designs?
Comfortable, sensual and well made.
What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?
The realisation that life is always transient and overlaps of culture and textiles is the way forward.
Looking ahead, do you have anything you are really excited about for your brand?
I am excited about going deeper into our chosen ethos and unravelling ( like an onion) what it really means to us.
Which celebrity or role model do you think reflects your brand’s style the best and why?
Martin Luther King and closer to home – MK Gandhi – Present Day – Gwyneth Paltrow. The first two fought for the truth and equality. Gwyneth embodies a sense of honesty that reflects what AISH stands for.
What are your favourite beach destinations?
Capri and Tel Aviv.
Where would you like to travel to in 2017 and why?
Morocco – I have been wanting to go since I was a child – once I have returned from my way to the country almost 17 years ago. If there is a time to go – it’s NOW.
What book do you recommend we add to our holiday reading list?
Beyond the Beautiful Forevers.
What is your beach bag essential?
Sunscreen and the AISH Shehla Kaftan.
What is your top beach beauty tip?
What is your desert island essential?
My desert island essential is comfortable and airy clothing that make you feel like the vacation will never end and that time is endless.
Thank you for your time Nupur!
