Spotlight on the Designer: Cali Dreaming

Posted by on

Getting to interview our favourite designers is always inspiring and this week's interview with Lisa Priolo and Carrie from Cali Dreaming has been very exciting for us. We are huge fans of their laid back, cool vibes brand, much like the ladies themselves!

Tell us a little about Cali Dreaming?

We founded CALi DREAMiNG in 2010, both sharing an affinity for the subtle palette of nude colors and appreciating the sophistication and complimentary result in wearing these shades. At the time, we both noticed this void in the swimwear market and so CALi DREAMiNG began.

By using our signature beige shimmer fabric as the core of our brand, we have created the building blocks necessary for customers to seasonally build their own, personalized Cali Dreaming collection. Both our Bathers and Covered collections evoke a "versatility meets simplicity" aesthetic that we are dedicated to delivering each season.

What or who inspires you, and why?

Lisa: I am never not seeing and appreciating the beauty in all my surroundings.  I also end each of my days scrolling thru Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram.  Inspiration is just a touch away and I take advantage of it daily.

Carrie: Art, Life, love and my children

What was the inspiration behind your newest collection?

Beachy palettes combined with luxurious textures, printed mesh fabrics and fuss free silhouettes form the foundations of our latest collections. We continue to incorporate nude shades and updated ours with black as well as a wider range of unique and hand-painted art prints, as well as the introduction to embroideries.

What is your favourite piece from your recent collection and why?

Lisa: I love the Lyra Top, especially in Egyptian Gold.  The top itself is so comfortable that I wear it daily as a bra and the gold is something new and fresh; the perfect update and summer staple.

Carrie: Our “Lacy” printed mesh Crux Bottom and Aries String bikini top – the nude mesh disappears on the body and my daughter Lacy’s black brush strokes come alive – I love wearing her art.  Also, the Black Lyra Top and Black Altair Bottom with the beige elastic trim is the perfect update to the classic, little black bikini!

Do you have anything in the future you are really excited about for your brand?

We are both beyond exciting for the launch of our new collection; we’ve expanded on our original art print offerings all of which we feel have a very fresh and unique appeal.

What is your one piece of advice you would give to any designer who is starting up or considering starting up?

Stay true to your vision and design with a point-of-view in mind.  If you stay true to your own aesthetic you can’t go wrong.

Where are your favourite beaches/pools around the world and why?

Lisa:  One of my favorite islands is Sandy Cay in the British Virgin Islands.  It’s only accessible by boat and you have to swim to shore; a true tropical experience.

Carrie: St. Martin, Isle Pinel – lying in the sun, swimming in the beautiful, warm ocean and eating fresh shellfish under the umbrella, love it!

What are your beach bag essential?

Aside from one another…

Carrie: A Cali Dreaming nude bather; timeless and understated and the perfect layering piece under sheer beach clothing.

Lisa: A hat, music and a few magazines, typically, C Magazine, British Vogue and Monocle.

What is your own signature beach style?

Carrie: A classic CALi DREAMiNG bather and sunglasses is all I need.

Lisa: A CALi DREAMiNG bather, a loose and unstructured cover-up and a large oversized carry-all bag.

And finally, do you have any top tips for staying stylish by the pool/beach and if so, what is it?

Always choose a bather and a cover-up you feel comfortable in; the more comfortable you are the more it will show.  You wear your clothes… they should never wear you.
