This week we are interviewing Florence Wilson, the designer/owner behind chic menswear brand Havelock Bay.
Tell us a little about yourself Florence...I have been in Dubai for 2 years, and before was living in London.
Tell us a little about your brand...The idea of Havelock Bay came to me when I was on holiday with my family – My father was wearing swimming trunks which were about 10 years old and my mother had even replaced the elastic in them! Later that year on holiday in the Andamans; I learnt to scuba dive and loved the different fish and colours of the ocean, and saw Rajan the elephant, all of which you can see in our prints.
What or who inspires you, and why? My Fiancé – He is a (much more successful!) entrepreneur and keeps me motivated – he also takes me to beautiful sunny places for ‘inspiration’ trips!
What was the inspiration behind your newest collection? The new ‘India Collection’ is an extension of our inaugural collection - The colours and prints all relate back to India and were the inspiration when we started Havelock Bay and came up with the name – Havelock is an island in the Andaman Archipelago, off the east coast of India.
What is your favourite piece from your recent collection and why? The ‘Tiger Time’ trunks – not only do I love the jungley background, but also the feel-good factor – proceeds go to the Tiger conservation charity Tiger Time.
Do you have anything in the future you are really excited about for your brand? We’re about to start working on next year’s collection which is always great fun – We’re also designing a bespoke print for trunks for a bachelor party weekend!
What is your one piece of advice you would give to any designer who is starting up or considering starting up? Ask for help – from friends, family, paid for, or free – you can’t do it all yourself. And it’s fun to collaborate and include people along the way!
Where are your favourite beaches/pools around the world and why? Beach 5 at Havelock Island is absolutely stunning and where our ‘Barefoot Luxury’ vibe comes from. Paraga beach in Mykonos is also one of my all-time favourites – amazing views, and with some great restaurants too.
What are yourbeach bag essentials? Always number 1: Sun cream – I’m fair and so super careful. Next, a sarong – the perfect multi-tasker: towel/ headscarf/changing room…
What is your own signature beach style? I like to keep things simple, I don’t wear a huge amount of jewellery on the beach, so a colourful kaftan, flip flops and big sunglasses.
And finally, do you have any top tips for staying stylish by the pool/beach and if so, what is it? Suncream – Lobster pink skin is not a good look! Something loose and floaty – hides evidence of those long lunches and cooler (in both senses of the word) than something tight.
5 quick ‘getting to know you holiday’ questions:
1. Bikini or One-piece - Bikini
2. Heels or flats - Flats
3. Beachside or Poolside - Poolside
4. Deserted island or Party island – Party Island – I’m getting married in Ibiza!
