This week we interview Lotty Bunbury from stunning beachwear brand, Pink House Mustique.
Where do you live Lotty? I live on the beautiful Caribbean island of Mustique.
Tell us a little about Pink House Mustique...In 2008 I opened ‘The Pink House’, a gingerbread-style boutique nestled under the palms on the little island of Mustique. I had been designing silk sarongs and kaftans on the island for years but there was no apparel for men that was uniquely “Mustique”. So, in 2010, I launched Pink House Mustique menswear; a collection of linen shirts and swimming trunks with the fun yet sophisticated feel of the island.
What or who inspires you, and why? One of the wonderful things about living on Mustique is that I am surrounded by limitless sources of inspiration; from the vibrantly coloured fishing boats to the stunning flowers that spring up in my garden I never have to look very far to find inspiration.
What was the inspiration behind your newest collection? I love snorkelling and looked to the sea for inspiration this year using seafans as one of the main prints. I always like to keep a sense of fun in my prints and I find that there is something quite comical and so easily recognisable about the silhouette of a pelican so they became another of our prints this year.
What is your favourite piece from your recent collection and why? I like our seafan violet swimming trunks best. They’re such a gorgeous colour and subtle print and would suit anyone.
Do you have anything in the future you are really excited about for your brand? We make a lot of beach accessories on the island that are currently only stocked in the Pink House boutique on Mustique but we’re constantly looking for ways to expand what we offer around the world so watch this space…!
What is your one piece of advice/motto you would give to any designer who is starting up or considering starting up? Stick to your ideals and don’t compromise too much when going for production or you’ll end up with a collection that is far removed from your original designs. It is hard work, but worth it to get what you want.
Where are your favourite beaches/pools around the world and why? We are completely spoilt for choice on Mustique as there are so many stunning beaches and incredible pools on the island. My favourite is Geliceaux beach on Mustique as you have to climb around the rocks to reach it so you usually have the whole beach to yourself – heaven.
What are yourbeach bag essential? A sarong and a good book.
What is your own signature beach style? I like to keep things simple and just wrap one of my Lotty B sarongs over a Pink House Mustique bikini for that laid back luxe look.
And finally, do you have any top tips for staying stylish by the pool/beach and if so, what is it? I think that sticking to a few key pieces – a great bikini, kaftan and pair of sunglasses – that really suit you is by far the most chic look for the beach.
