Tell us a little about Solid And Striped?
Established in 2012 in Water Mill after Isaac Ross, founder of Solid and Striped fell in love with a vintage pair of classic men’s swim trunks. There was such a need for classic men’s swim trunks that Solid and Striped was born. The brand has since evolved to now include men’s ready to wear, women’s swim and women’s ready to wear. There is intent behind the designs and silhouettes, it is easy and comfortable and takes our customer to the streets of the city to the sandy beaches.
What are three words you would use to describe your designs?
Bold, classic and influential
What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Spring 2016 takes its direction from a vintage 1970’s photograph of a sunset at a Floridian hotel. Dusty pinks and nudes contrast with the landscape hues of green and brown, forming the core collection palette.
The Solid & Striped woman is forever classic with a hint of nostalgia, and this season she’s daydreaming of what it would have been like to swim at the Don CeSar’s St. Pete resort back in the day.
The Spring 2016 collection is meant to be worn all throughout this woman’s journey - breakfast on the terrace, through to an aprés-dinner beach bash.
Looking ahead, do you have anything you are really excited about for your brand?
Growing our world, which for Spring/Summer 2016 will include accessories, we collaborated with the ever cool footwear brand Feiyue. We designed the sneakers to use men’s swim fabrics which make the sneaker water- resistant. Now you can wear a head – to- toe Solid and Striped outfit.
Which celebrity or role model do you think reflects your brand’s style the best and why? The classic woman from the ‘60s and ‘70s is what inspires me everyday. Women like Lois Chiles, Farah Fawcett, Jean Shrimpton and Jackie Kennedy all had such a presence, a strong feminine personality that inspired women to be powerful, implicitly sexy and speak their mind. It is a woman that is so true to her self that drives me to design for her. The ease of these women is also something I keep in mind.
Where is your favourite beach destination?
Mykonos is one of my favorites. There is a seafood restaurant right on the beach that is run by a husband and wife. Theirs is nothing better than a home cooked meal right at the beach during sunset.
Where would you like to travel to in 2016 and why? Peru and visit the llamas, I don’t think there is a better reason.
What book do you recommend we add to our holiday reading list? Patti Smith “M Train”
What is your beach bag essential? A bucket hat! Which will be part of the Solid and Striped Spring 2016 collection.
What is your top beach beauty tip? Sunscreen. No one likes getting burnt.
My desert island essential is……….. a new clean tote to collect little treasures.
Thanks Michelle for your time!
