Flashy artistic designer eyewear is definitely in this season- and the beauty of it is that it’s not just limited to a few trends- there’s a multitude of shapes, dimensions and colours to suit every taste and style. We take you through our favourite SS16 statement sunglasses, as seen both on the catwalk, and on the streets.
The New Aviators
Aviators are timeless- they’re guaranteed to add instant coolness to any outfit. Raybans and Persols never go out of style, and every girl should own a pair; they’re an eternal wardrobe staple. This year sees a twist on the classic Aviators through a variety of paler and coloured lenses, both mirrored and non-mirrored, and unusual frames (or lack of them!).
Mirrored Lenses
The orange, red and purple maxi mirrored sunglasses at Chanel’s SS16 fashion show completely ruled the catwalk. These showstoppers can be paired with any simple outfit for an immediate injection of fun and colour to your look. Not suitable for the faint-hearted, or those who prefer an understated look.

Chunky Frames
Chunky oversized frames are perfect if you want your sunglasses to make a bold statement. Colourful plexiglass eyewear, geometric frames and embellished eyewear are a must this season and promise to updo any look. Dolce&Gabbana’s flower sunglasses and Gucci’s square sparkly ones are exquisitely exaggerated and feminine– a fashionista’s summer dream.
Round Frames
The much-loved Round shape is still going strong, although many geometric variations are also big trends this season. Octagonal, multi-sided lenses and hybrid geometric designs were all the rage on SS16 catwalks and are now everywhere on the high street.

Irregular Shapes
Playfully irregular shapes were also spotted on the catwalks, such as the eye-catching Guitar-shaped sunglasses by Acne Studios. Cat-eye sunglasses – irresistibly glamorous and always chic- were already a big trend and are still going strong this year, with the frames being stretched out into thicker and more extravagant shapes. Miu Miu’s Butterfly sunglasses are currently a big hit on the streets of Paris.
